The National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain is to celebrate the genius of Elgar Howarth.

On Sunday 16th October, the day following the National Finals, The National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain will be celebrating Elgar Howarth’s five year tenure as Artistic Director at London’s newest classical music venue, Cadogan Hall, Chelsea.

Elgar Howarth’s reign has been momentous, with new commissions and artistic programming which has very often taken the NYBBGB into ground previously untrodden by brass bands.

Four conductors will conduct the NYBBGB on this auspicious occasion: Elgar Howarth himself, the two Associate Conductors appointed by Howarth - Nicholas Childs and Garry Cutt and Howarth’s successor as NYBBGB Artistic maestro - Bramwell Tovey. Lesley Howie will be the guest soloist, performing the middle movement of Elgar Howarth’s Concerto for Tenor Horn and Brass Band. Other special guests also appearing in the concert are London Brass and SAMYO.

There is particular significance to the venue and the appearance of London Brass and SAMYO. Cadogan Hall is the home of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Elgar Howarth was for many years Principal Trumpet of the RPO, as well as Chairman for a period, and is now an Honorary member of the orchestra. London Brass grew out of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, of which Elgar Howarth was a founder member.

SAMYO

SAMYO, the South Asian Music Youth Orchestra, are special guests of the NYBBGB and there appearance is part of the ongoing NYBBGB Brass Fusion project where the National Youth Brass Band work and perform with different types of music and cultures.

London Brass

London Brass will perform The Fairy Round, Old English Music and Hungarian Rhapsody.

As well as his Tenor Horn Concerto, Elgar Howarth has programmed another of his compositions, Mosaic; Diversions on Bass Theme - George Lloyd; the NYBBGB’s latest commission - Rote Fahne Musik (3rd movement) - Muldowney and most significantly the programme will conclude with Bramwell Tovey conducting the NYBBGB in Eric Ball’s transcription of Edward Elgar’s overture Froissart. This will see the handover of the Artistic Director’s position from Elgar Howarth to Bramwell Tovey.

Tickets can be obtained from the Box Office at Cadogan Hall, telephone 020 7730 4500.
